NATURKLIMAGipuzkoa Provincial
Council's Climate
Change Foundation

Naturklima is the Gipuzkoa Provincial Council's Climate Change Foundation, attached to the Council's Department of the Environment.

Naturklima was created to furnish a response to two basic questions: What is the dimension of the problem we face in Gipuzkoa? What should our priority courses of action be to address a phenomenon of this magnitude?

The Naturklima Foundation emerged to act as a key player in climate change governance in Gipuzkoa, and as a public multidisciplinary centre operating within the context of Gipuzkoa's Strategy to Combat Climate Change ("ELCCG").

It focuses on three main areas of activity:

1

Gipuzkoa Climate Change Observatory. The observatory monitors the global impacts of climate change around the world, and also specifically within our territory. It is necessary to secure data, surveys and detailed information on the consequences of climate change in Gipuzkoa in specific areas such as the coast and shoreline, agriculture, tourism, transport etc. Information must be available on our degree of vulnerability and the impacts that may arise from this phenomenon in order to anticipate the specific measures to take at local level.

2

In order to address the challenges facing us in our everyday lives, thereby making a contribution to the ecological transition, the foundation supports and accelerates specific CIRCULAR ECONOMY and ENERGY TRANSITION projects, to provide incentives for Gipuzkoa's businesses to undertake criteria which steer us towards a green economy that will also generate jobs within the territory.

3

The Virtual Workshop and Documentation Centre in relation to climate change, which will be up and running by 2021, will give any interested parties access to the latest developments in this field and to its education and information schedule.

Analysis and monitoring

The main objective of the Gipuzkoa Climate Change Observatory is to observe, document, analyse and monitor the impacts, risks and vulnerabilities arising from climate change in the territory.

Design and implementation of projects

In order to address the challenges facing us in our everyday lives, thereby making a contribution to the ecological transition, the foundation supports and accelerates specific CIRCULAR ECONOMY and ENERGY TRANSITION projects. By means of these initiatives and participation in a number of European projects we provide incentives for Gipuzkoa's businesses to undertake criteria which steer us towards a green economy that will also generate jobs within the territory.

Training and information

The Virtual Workshop and Documentation Centre will seek to inform and educate the general public on all issues relating to climate change. It mainly focuses on queries and visits by all those wishing to gain an insight into the phenomenon and its effects on Gipuzkoa's territorial system.

MISSION

To generate the institutional, technical and social capacity to deal with the impacts of CC in our territory, by facilitating and accelerating the innovation required for the socio-ecological transition of our territory.

VISION

Gipuzkoa, an eco-responsible territory, which is adapting to the consequences of CC and is boosting energy efficiency, renewable energies, eco-industries, sustainable mobility and a focus on new secondary resources, has closed the loop of the circular economy with a hypocarbon model. Training, education and awareness across all spheres of society have helped move us towards the socio-ecological transition.

GIPUZKOA IS TAKING ACTION

Gipuzkoa is a territory that is particularly vulnerable to climate change. If greenhouse gas emissions remain at their current levels, expectations are that the sea level may rise between 29 and 49 cm, which would do away with one third of our beaches and cause serious damage to all our ecosystems.

The Naturklima Foundation was created to address the challenge of climate change in Gipuzkoa. Global warming is a problem with a planetary dimension, but many of the answers to this challenge relate to decisions we take at a local and personal level. This is true of mobility, usage of the territory, administration of our natural spaces or the use of public transport; all of these are aspects with a direct impact on climate.

Naturklima intends to create an observatory to gather specific data on the impacts of climate in Gipuzkoa. On this premise and pursuant to Gipuzkoa's climate change strategy, Gipuzkoa GK 2050, the Foundation will work to promote the circular economy and extend the use of renewable energies in our territory. All these initiatives will be carried out alongside a campaign of awareness and sensitisation, which are key factors to involve the public at large.

Climate change urges us to swap words for action, and with Naturklima, Gipuzkoa is taking action.

David Zabala

MANAGING DIRECTOR

Passionate about the world of business, innovation, and entrepreneurship, David is convinced that business is the best tool to solve the great challenges we are facing as a society (such as the fight against climate change) and to create shared value, provided that this is done from the perspective of sustainability (economic, social and environmental).

After graduating in Business Management from the University of Deusto, he began started work at Eko-REC, a leading European industrial company in Circular Economy, where for six years he worked on several prominent international innovation projects in the field of recycling and Circular Economy. During his time at Eko-REC, while head of Business Development and Communication of the company, he trained in Brand Strategy and Digital Marketing, earning two masters at ESDEN Business School to address innovation projects from a value-added-oriented perspective and, above all, oriented directly at the market and creation of new companies.

The most successful project was EKOMODO, a design and sustainable accessory brand for individuals and companies (such as corporate gifts), which started as an intrapreneurship in the parent company but which, in 2019, after validating the value proposition and business mode, became established as a spin-off with great potential in the field of sustainability and the fight against climate change.

David joined Naturklima in October 2020.
